Why Bamboo Lyocell Sheets Are Ideal for Boats and Yachts
As a busy founder, I need activities to balance all of the screen time I have during the week. Sailing is one of my favorite ways to stop checking my phone and be present in nature. It took me a while to learn how to sleep on a boat. Now I take earplugs, an eye mask, and ettitude bedding, and it’s like sleeping at home.
Boats and yachts create a bedding environment cotton wasn't built for: constant humidity, salt air, condensation, and mattresses that need to dry fast between uses. Why humidity and salt air are hard on bedding
A cabin below deck holds onto moisture in a way a bedroom on land doesn't. Condensation forms on hulls and portholes overnight, salt air keeps humidity elevated even with ventilation running, and a berth mattress rarely gets the airflow a bedroom mattress does. That combination is exactly what breaks down bedding the fastest: fabric that stays damp longer holds onto moisture, sweat, and salt residue, which allows mildew and musty odors to set in between trips.
Cotton is absorbent, but it's a slow-drying fiber; it soaks up moisture and holds it, rather than moving it along. In a humid cabin, a cotton sheet that got damp overnight can still be damp the next day. That's the core problem with a marine bedding environment compared to a climate-controlled bedroom.
What makes bamboo lyocell perform better on board
It wicks moisture instead of absorbing and holding it. Bamboo lyocell fiber has a naturally hydrophilic (moisture-loving) microstructure that draws moisture away from the skin and spreads it across the fabric surface rather than trapping it. In third-party AATCC wicking tests, ettitude's CleanBamboo® Sateen outperformed bamboo viscose and Tencel lyocell by 31% on vertical wicking, the specific measure of how well a fabric pulls moisture away from the body and releases it for evaporation.
It dries faster. Because moisture spreads and evaporates rather than pooling in the fiber, bamboo lyocell sheets dry quicker after washing or a humid night, a meaningful advantage on a boat, where laundry access and drying time are both limited.
It's naturally more breathable and temperature-regulating. Bamboo lyocell's fiber structure allows more airflow through the weave than cotton, which helps offset the lack of natural ventilation in a below-deck cabin.

Bamboo lyocell vs. cotton vs. microfiber for marine use
Sizing
ettitude's standard sheet sizes, Queen, King, and California King, fit most boat and yacht berths that use a standard mattress cut, including many v-berth conversions and larger owner's cabins. Because deep-pocket fitted sheets are cut generously (up to 17" pocket depth), they can also accommodate mattresses that run slightly thicker or shorter than a standard bedroom mattress.
