Cooling Sheets for Postpartum Night Sweats (and the Years After): A Real Guide
By Rebecca Schwartz Smith, Founder & CEO of Mamala Organics
I'm Rebecca. I built Mamala Organics, a nutrition brand for women in hormonal transition. Our real-food Support Snacks™ are formulated for every stage, from menstruation to menopause, when your body is asking for functional whole foods and you often don't have the time to get them in.
I've had two kids. I have a lot of friends in perimenopause. And I've been through the postpartum night sweat phase twice. (The kind where you wake up in the middle of the night convinced your bedroom is a sauna and your partner somehow isn't even warm.)
When the team at ettitude asked me to write a cooling guide, I had a lot to say.
And honestly, I'm writing this for two versions of myself. The postpartum one who was drenched at 2AM with a newborn on her chest. And the future one I'm already thinking about, because I'm at the age where my friends are starting to talk about hot flashes, and I'm paying close attention. This guide is for both of us.
Here's what I've learned: there's no single fix. But there is a setup that actually helps.
Why Your Body Does This
Postpartum night sweats are not a sign that something's wrong. They're your body doing exactly what it's supposed to do (ugh). During pregnancy, estrogen and progesterone surge, then, within days of birth, they crash. That hormonal drop triggers your hypothalamus, your internal thermostat, to misread your body temperature and overcorrect by sweating. If you're breastfeeding, prolactin suppresses estrogen even further, which is why night sweats can stretch for weeks or months postpartum.
Most women assume it's just part of the deal and don't mention it to their provider. It is part of the deal. It's also miserable. Both things are true.
The perimenopausal version works similarly — estrogen drops, the hypothalamus misfires, the sweating begins. Different chapter, same mechanism. Which is why the setup that got me through postpartum is the same one I'm building for what comes next.
The Foundation
ettitude Cooling Sheets—
Non-negotiable. I was already an ettitude customer before this collaboration, which is the only reason I said yes to writing this. Bamboo lyocell regulates temperature in a way that regular cotton just doesn't — it wicks and releases where cotton absorbs and holds. If you're waking up soaked, your sheets are either helping or making it worse. These help.
Washable Pee Pad—
OK, might sound crazy but when you're soaking through the sheets this prevents the need to also wash your mattress cover on repeat. And in a few years, when you're potty training a toddler, it'll come in handy again. We're all about sustainability here.
The Toolkit
Cozy Ice Pack
Ice on the back of the neck is the tried and true cooldown method and this ice pack is made for just that. If you opt for a bedside mini freezer, even better.
Mini Bedside Fan
Small. Quiet. Pointed directly at your face. Essential. I even travel with this little guy.
Magnesium Spray
Magnesium supports muscle relaxation and sleep quality, both relevant when your body is in hormonal flux. Apply before bed to the soles of your feet.
The Mist
A cooling facial mist on your nightstand is a critical element of my cooldown — a bit of freshness to soothe me back to slumber. My pick is super clean: True Botanicals. But it's also very simple to make yourself — distilled water plus rose petals, cucumber, or aloe, depending on your preference, in a spray bottle, chilled. Voila.
What I Actually Eat Before Bed
This is where Mamala comes in. Night sweats and hot flashes both increase fluid loss and interrupt rest. Mamamellow, our evening Support Snack™, is made with hydrating whole-food ingredients, plant-based protein, and functional mushrooms to support relaxation, replenishment, and rest. Not a cure. But real-food support during the transitions that disrupt sleep.
Nosh well and stay cool.
